Prayerlessness is pride that says you don’t need God.

Like Daniel, Dori was desperately needy. She was a woman caught up in the turmoil of the Syrian civil war.1 She had been the privileged, almost spoiled wife of a wealthy Syrian businessman. She had lived in Damascus, shopped in Europe, and vacationed in Dubai. But then one night she had received a phone call from her brother-in-law telling her that her husband had just been arrested, and she had to immediately flee her home with her two teenage children. With tears streaming down their faces and a longing look over their shoulders at their residential mansion, they crept through the shadows of the night as they began their sixty-five-mile journey on foot to safety. About five days later, they found themselves in a holding camp two miles short of the Syrian–Jordanian border. With no food. No running water. No toilets. On the second night in the camp, with her starving children shielding her movements from any casual observer, Dori dug under the fence, walked to the highway, and began flagging down the passing trucks, begging for food and water. Four times trucks stopped, but the drivers were interested in getting something from Dori, not giving anything to her. The fourth time she fought off a would-be rapist, another trucker saw what was happening and stopped to help. Warning her of the extreme dangers of begging on the highway, he graciously and generously gave her food and water. When she thanked him effusively, the Syrian man said, “The Lord Jesus bless you, Dori. Look to Him. He will be your shelter.” Then he was gone. Dori had no idea what the man was talking about, but she felt a strange peace come into her heart as she took the food back to her children.

The next day Dori and her children climbed under the fence and crossed the border, walking two more days to Amman. With the little bit of money she had brought with her, she was able to secure an old, rundown apartment in the center of the city. She was helped by a very kind woman who described herself as one of the “Bible people.” This woman named Samar not only helped Dori and the two young people get settled in the apartment, but she explained to Dori who Jesus was when He began appearing to Dori in her dreams. Finally, Dori made the very dangerous decision to leave Islam and follow Him, knowing that her choice could cost her her life.

Several nights later, as Dori lay on the cold, hard cement floor, listening to her daughter’s soft weeping and her son’s grumbling, she decided to try and pray. Without doubt, Dori had never heard of Daniel, but she prayed out of desperation, Jesus, we are so tired and hungry. We have nothing in this apartment. It’s a miserable life, but I know You love us . . . then she drifted off to sleep.

The next morning, as sunlight poured through the only window in the apartment, she was startled awake by an insistent knock at her door.
